Once you are seated in the bistro de nuit, the menus and wine list should arrive shortly.

The wine list and wine etiquette have their own unique set of etiquette intricacies. These rules really have more to do with choosing and sampling the wine for best effect rather than cultural or behavioral solutions. Here are the tasting basics:

  1. When the wine arrives at the table, look at the label. Make sure the wine that is presented to you is the one you ordered.
  2. Make sure the cork is in place. Never accept an open bottle.
  3. Check the bottles temperature. Simply grab the bottle and assess if this wine is chilled to the appropriate temperature. The general rule of whites chilled and reds at room temperature applies, but each wine has it's own intricacies and it is best do your own research on this subject.
  4. Allow the server to open your wine and pour a small amount for tasting in the wine glass. Your server should also present the cork to you at this time. Make sure the cork is still wet. A dry cork could indicate a poor seal and thus an inferior bottle of wine.
  5. Now is the time to give the wine its traditional sniff. Swirl the wine and allow it to oxygenate. If you smell a fruity texture, the wine is undoubtedly fine. If you smell any indications of mildew or any traces that could be construed as remnants of storage, you have an inadequate bottle on your hands.
  6. Grasping the glass by the stem, take a taste. This one is simple. If you like it, drink it. If the wine is truly terrible, you certainly have the right to send it back.

The wine jungle is thick and can be thoroughly beguiling. This forum is meant to be for behavioral etiquette and proper wine design is best left for a true wine forum. Check our links page to begin your journey into wine country.
