Visiting Koutoubia isn’t like going out to dinner. It’s like going on vacation. The owner, Michel Ohayon is a gracious host who welcomes you like an old friend. The décor is spectacular. It doesn’t just create the illusion of a Moroccan palace, it is a Moroccan palace. Ushered into an incense perfumed oasis, you’ll sink into cushy pillows and eat from inlaid tables. Start your night off with an aperitif from the full bar, or a platter of several indigenous salads for two. The service here has been raised to an art form: the staff wears traditional garments, they ritualistically wash your hands, and are happy to offer insightful menu advice to the new guest.
If anything is more impressive that the elegant atmosphere, it’s the food. The chicken with preserved lemons and olives is so tender it practically falls of the bone. Even more surprising is the chicken and walnut pie, lightly dusted with a coating of cinnamon sugar. It’s like nothing you’ve ever tasted, but the flavors blend so remarkably well that you’ll find yourself craving it the next day. If you’re a fan of lamb you’ll find a large variety of well seasoned dishes, and there are beef options as well. Be sure to finish off your meal with a bracing cup of traditional mint tea.
Dining in style is one of the most accessible and resplendent pleasures available to us. Koutoubia understands this; let them treat you to a fantastic dinner and you’ll leave feeling full, refreshed, and thoroughly happy that you came. nvl. |
