When we walked into Gloria’s Café, I was a total stranger to El Salvadorian food. By the time I left, I was a devotee! If you’ve never had an El Salvadorian meal, you are in for a taste adventure you won’t soon forget. The exterior of Gloria’s isn’t much to look at; tucked into a business strip along Venice, you’d be likely to drive right by. But the strip offers a parking lot, and the interior of Gloria’s has a kitschy charm that will make you smile. And if the décor doesn’t do it, the staff is sure to.
The staff here is warm and definitely takes care of the guests (The waiter had made sure all of the onions were picked out of one patrons salsa because he “remembered she didn’t like onions.”). The food is not only inexpensive, but also fabulous. At $7.95, you HAVE to try the El Salvadorian dinner consisting of a sweet corn tamale and a pork and cheese papusa (somewhat like a savory filled pancake grilled to perfection and served with mild tomato sauce and pickled cabbage). Our waiter made sure we knew about all the different menu items and gave us tips on the traditional ways to eat them. Even the black beans and rice, throw away items at many restaurants, had a great flavor and texture.
Gloria’s is a family affair and has a winning combination of a genuinely nice staff and fabulous food. Add to that incredibly reasonable prices, and you’ve got a thoroughly wonderful dining experience. nvl. |
