It's true. It seems Peruvian food is dead in west LA. As of this writing, El Polla Inka, the last hope (on the west side) for this wonderful cuisine is gone. We are aware of other peruvian restaurants in town but they are a bit of a dash for westsiders.
It's hard to say why El Pollo Inka went under. We haven't been able to get a hold of any one to find out but we can take a guess or two. The food at El Pollo Inka was great. We really enjoyed our little moment with them and still think it was perhaps the best Peruvian meal we've ever had. The rub really seemed to come from two places: Parking and Decor.
The parking lot was really very cramped and while they had a valet, the idea of turning the car over to one of those guys...well....you get the idea. As for the atmosphere, well, Imagine eating Peruvian food in a 1950's diner. It just didn't work.
And so....our search continues for great Peruvian food on the west side.

Walking into El Pollo Inka, you might not know exactly what to think - the décor looks suspiciously like a 50’s diner, but the food doesn’t smell like greasy burgers and fries. There are trippy black light paintings that add to the ambiance. So, what gives? If you don’t know what to expect, I’ll clear it up for you -you’re in for a treat! Peruvian food is hearty, tasty, and full of unique and wonderful flavors.
Peruvian roast chicken is a mouth watering classic, as is the beef and peppers dish of Lomo Saltado. If seafood is your preference, there are stews, fried dishes, and specialties a plenty. They even have several vegetarian dishes. If you’re up for something a little unusual, try the chicken with walnut gravy. It’s tender, flavorful, and unlike anything you’ve ever had before. Even if you’re full, make sure to order a caramel filled cookie. They are a wonderful blend of salty and sweet that will melt in your mouth.
It’s always fun to try something new - El Pollo Inka has all sorts of new dishes for you to try - and fall in love with! nvl 9/8/04 |
