If your familiar with the California Wok group of Chinese restaurants, Cheng Du's cuisine won't be a shocker for you. You'll find this restaurant up to, if not a cut above, the same standards you would expect from the others in this batch. I have always enjoyed this little franchise and have counted these restaurants among my favorites in the Chinese category.
Just west of Sawtelle on Pico is where you will find Cheng Du. If you remember the Chung King restaurant, you will find Cheng Du in the same location serving a similar menu. During our brief stay we enjoyed a lunch of Garlic Prawns and Tangerine Chicken. Included in our lunch was soup, egg rolls and rice and for the money, this is a real deal.
While Cheng Du wins the cuisine battle on Pico, the service is another story. Businesses are run by people and so they are bound to be imperfect. In the case of our visit, we found that this was Cheng Du's weak point. Our waitress was slow, inattentive and rather gruff. Not a good combination for a start up restaurant. rps. |
